Blackberry Web Shortcuts

delta-romeo | 18 Dec 07

This cool little Blackberry app lets you place shortcuts to various mobile websites you might frequent on your Blackberry desktop instead of first having to pull up the Blackberry browser and then navigate to a bookmark or manually enter a web address.

From your Blackberry, navigate to the web shortcuts page and download the shortcut hub utility and up to six web shortcuts. Run the shortcut hub utility and assign a name for each shortcut, the link to the mobile site and a link to a PNG file you would like to use which will be displayed as the icon for the shortcut on the Blackberry desktop. The app also supports use of images stored on an SD card and directly on the Blackberry although there appear to be issues when doing so.

You will now have easy access to your favorite mobile sites directly on your Blackberry desktop.

Note that after you setup your various links, the PNG file for each shortcut will not be displayed until you run it for the first time. It will then download the image file and update accordingly.

If you encounter any problems, feel free to ask me for help or check out the listing over at Blackberry Forums which might answer some of your questions faster than I can.

Gubb - Simple To-Do List Manager

delta-romeo |

Not sure how I missed this simple web based to-do list manager. Gubb allows you to setup multiple to-do lists via your web browser.

Benefits of Gubb include:

  • To-do lists available via mobile phone (tested on iPhone and Blackberry)… http://grub.net/m
  • You can e-mail an item to a list using the address assigned to that list (username-listname@gubb.net)
  • If you send a blank e-mail to a list, Gubb will send you an e-mail of all to-do items on that list
  • Also supports SMS (see supported carriers on this page)
  • The printed to-do lists are actually “pretty”
  • Various color schemes available for each list
  • Drag & drop lists, to-do items, etc.
  • Assign due dates
  • Tons of other features

And like the majority of the other Web 2.0 apps out there, Gubb also has an API. I am so going to implement Gubb into my application launcher Dash.

Dash Command Update

delta-romeo |

My favorite application launcher of choice has just been updated! Dash Command is one kick ass launcher. But do not read that as just another application launcher. Dash can do so much more. Anyway, if you have played around with the various application launchers like SlickRun, Launchy, Find and Run Robot but are looking for something better, try Dash. Dash will set you back $20 but worth every penny.

Version 0.95 has squashed some bugs but has added a ton of new features. My favorite update is the built in message box which you can use with various applications and works with various command line stuff like IPConfig. The window is a semi-transparent black window which can be resized and you can also copy information directly from the message box (like your current IP address).

More information about Dash is here and you can check out the newest features of version 0.95 here.

Converting MHTML to HTML

delta-romeo | 5 Dec 07

As I mentioned back in this post, I’m a big user of Microsoft’s OneNote 2007. I can do all kinds of research and organize it in various ways inside OneNote including insertion of graphics, PowerPoints, video, etc.

As part of my current workflow, when conducting any internet research, I copy various snippets of text or any graphics or PowerPoints I may find and I place them into OneNote using a plugin with Firefox. When doing so, OneNote places a link to the web page where I copied the text from or a link to the actual image file, PowerPoint, etc. Very cool stuff.

When my research is complete, I can then e-mail this “page” of notes as an MHTML file. The MHTML format is OK and has it’s good and it’s bad (mostly bad). OneNote being a Microsoft product (and part of Office 2007), it was designed to work with Outlook. Fine. This is what is used in my office. But what if I did some research that I would like to review on my Blackberry? Read the rest of this entry »

Getting Organized Experiment Programs 2007

delta-romeo |

DonationCoder.com has posted several free utilities which were submitted in response to it’s GOE Coding Challenge to assist in getting things organized. These little utilities range from programs that help you justify a decision to a simple utility that will help you keep track of your progress. Sure these aren’t full blown applications but I personally prefer simple, straightforward and to the point without all of other crap added in.

Go check ‘em out!

Firefox Beta 3 Update

delta-romeo | 4 Dec 07

I’ve been using Firefox Beta 3 for about two weeks now and I love it. It seems much faster than it’s brother version 2. Like all previous major upgrades, your extensions will not work out of the box. However, after downloading the Nightly Test Tools extension, the following plugins are working great for me:

  • ChatZilla
  • Download Statusbar
  • Gmail Manager
  • Googlebar Lite
  • Greasemonkey
  • PDF Download
  • Scribefire
  • Web Developer Toolbar

The only other extension I have installed that does not work is the Clip to OneNote extension. I tried modifying it but it tells me that the extension does not provide secure updates which is obviously a new feature in the beta 3. I will keep playing around to see if I can get it to work.

In the mean time, if you don’t mind a few bugs, Firefox Beta 3 is highly recommended.

I Just Don’t Understand

delta-romeo | 3 Dec 07

I was pointed to this article over at CNN and read it in amazement. Not because of what the Marine Drill Instructor did (the article is already flawed by referring to the Marine DI as a “drill sergeant”) but because of what he received punishment for. When I went through boot camp at Parris Island in 1992, what this DI did was the norm. I knew it going in and I still volunteered. No one forced me. So how could I possibly cry about something I knew was going to happen? Speak to any Marine and they will tell you the same thing. To the pansy-ass cry babies, I do not want you in my Corps. There is a reason Marines have our reputation. Read the rest of this entry »

SlideShowPro for Lightroom

delta-romeo |

Although I do not see any information displayed at SlideShowPro, I noticed after logging into my account that SlideShowPro for Lightroom is now available for purchase as of today.

There are two purchase options available for SlideShowPro for Lightroom. If you do not own the SlideShowPro component for Flash, you can buy SlideShowPro for Lightroom for $25.00. If you already own the SlideShowPro component for Flash, you can crossgrade for only $10! This really is a steal.

You can take a look at some of the various gallery examples created using SlideShowPro. SlideShowPro for Lightroom will allow you to conduct your various workflow inside Lightroom and then choose SlideShowPro as your display gallery from within Lightroom.

After I have some time to play around with SlideShowPro for Lightroom, I will provide my thoughts here.

EDIT:  The official SlideShowPro for Lightroom page is now up and running…

Master Your DSLR Camera

delta-romeo | 30 Nov 07

Having recently purchased my first SLR camera, I have been reading anything and everything I can find on photography including all of the crazy terms like aperture, shutter speed, DOF, etc. while waiting on the arrival of better glass and a speedlight I purchased.

A couple of weeks back, Lifehacker posted Part 1 of a two part series regarding mastering your digital SLR camera. A very simple article in getting your feet wet in digital photography beyond a point-and-shoot.

Today, Lifehacker has posted part 2 of the series which covers aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, shooting in manual mode and the other various modes available on SLRs. This, to me, is where the fun begins. This is what sets an SLR camera apart from the point-and-shoots. A very good read and like the prior article, simple and straight to the point.

I highly recommend a review of both if you are just getting your feet wet in digital photography with an SLR (like me). And thanks to Scott Feldstein for sharing with us “wet behind the ears” photographers.

Nick Sabban’s Home Egged

delta-romeo | 28 Nov 07

I am a huge Alabama Crimson Tide fan. The following is hilarious!

Alabama Crimson Tide Logo

According to a Tuscaloosa Police report, someone apparently attempted to egg Nick Saban’s home.

Report states:

An empty egg carton was recovered at the scene. Two eggs hit Coach Saban’s house, 2 eggs went over his house and hit his neighbor’s back door, 2 eggs hit the houses of the neighbors on either side of Coach Saban’s house, and the remaining 3 eggs were found broken on the ground near the carton from where the individual threw them. Looking at what was hit, police officials say they are considering John Parker Wilson as the primary suspect.

Roll Tide!
